Al Rooney - Head Coach/Director of Hockey Ops: |
| |
This will be Coach Rooney's 5th year behind the bench for the Eagles this upcoming season. In seasons past, Al has guided the Eagles at both the "A" and "B" Level, including winning the MET League Championship in 2004-05. This will be Al's 2nd year as both Coach and Director of Hockey Ops, and he continues to be successful in preparing and moving players on to the collegiate level.
Prior to his Coaching career, Al was a goaltender for 15 seasons before retiring to go behind the bench with the Eagles. He began playing hockey later in life than most. His career started his Senior year of high school at the age of 16, on Long Island, NY. After a season of local club hockey on the Island, Al went on to play 2 years of Junior hockey out in the mid-west. His 1st season was playing Junior B under former NHL’er and '76 Olympian Steve Jensen. That season, Al helped lead his team to the league Championship only to fall 2 games to 1 in the final. The following season Al played a season of Junior A in Bismarck, ND. It was here that Al turned some heads as he turned in a 63 save performance in a 7-5 losing effort against the touring Czech Junior National Team. This opened the door for him to further his career in college. After his Junior experience, Rooney played 3 years of college hockey with his 1st year being at then NJCAA powerhouse, NDSU Bottineau. That year, Rooney again led his team to the NJCAA National Championships, finishing as semi-finalists. He then transferred for his final 2 seasons of college to Buffalo State, in the Div III SUNYAC League. After 2 seasons at Buffalo State, Al decided to fore-go his remaining eligibility and began his professional career.
In 1996, Al began his career pro career with the Florida Panthers minor league affiliate, the Port Huron Border Cats in the UHL. He stopped 30 of 31 shots in his debut for a 5-1 win and went on to play for 8 season’s total in his career. Over the course of those seasons, Al played professionally in the CHL and WPHL most notably several years in San Angelo, Texas where he was part of the 1998-99 Playoff Conference Championship season. Al also won the 1998 Fan Favorite Award while playing for the Outlaws. He eventually finished his career in Miami in the 2003-04 Season, and retired to become Associate Head Coach of the Eagles with Keith McAdams. In their inaugural 2004-05 season, the Eagles won the Met League Championship and finished 3rd at Nationals for a fantastic opening campaign. Over the past 4 seasons, the Eagles organization has sent over 20 players on to play College hockey. For the upcoming 2008-09 Season, Al is looking to guide a mix of returning players who gained valuable experience last season, and some hungry newcomers for an exciting 2008-09 Season! Al lives in Cohoes with his wife Mackenzie, and has a 10 year old son, Sylvain, who lives in Nashville, but has been known to crash an Eagles practice or two!
